Medical pot industry takes root in Alberta

Feb. 20, 2015, Edmonton —Canada’s growing medical marijuana industry is taking root in Alberta.

Health Canada has granted a licence to Aurora Cannabis Inc. to produce medical pot in Mountain View County north of Calgary.

Aurora says the plants are to be grown at a $10.5-million, secure high-tech facility that can produce up to 8,000 kilograms of weed a year.

Aurora says it is the first medical marijuana company to obtain a federal licence in Alberta and chose the province because of its clean mountain water and low tax and utility rates.

Health Canada’s website shows it has licensed about two dozen companies in Canada to cultivate medical marijuana, mostly in Ontario and British Columbia.

Although Aurora has been given the green light in Alberta, it won’t be able to sell it to eligible people until the first crop is approved by federal inspectors, perhaps this spring.
