No action yet taken allowing cannabis retailers to operate in Surrey

June 26, 2023  By The Canadian Press

The Surrey Board of Trade says the city’s mayor and council have not yet taken any action on the board’s call to allow cannabis retailers to operate in Surrey.

A statement from the board says it released its cannabis industry policy paper three months ago, but Surrey council has not yet created a framework that would open the door to pot shops.

Board of trade president Anita Huberman says marijuana retailers have had unprecedented success elsewhere in B.C. and Surrey can create a safe, efficient regulatory framework that uses zoning, licensing and bylaw enforcement to manage pot retailers.

The board says the cannabis industry contributes more than 17 billion dollars to the Canadian economy every year and legal marijuana businesses also create thousands of direct jobs and even-more spin-off employment.
